Deep tissue massage in Reading, PA

Deep tissue massage is slow, layered work on the muscles and fascia that hold chronic tension — the upper back that's been tight for years, the hips that never loosen. Every session is mobile across Reading and Berks County: I bring the table, warmer, and linens to you.

Is deep tissue massage just a harder massage?

No — and that's the most common misconception. Deep tissue work is about slower, more specific pressure that gives tissue time to release, not about maximum force. Digging harder into a guarded muscle just makes it guard more. The skill is in finding the layer that's restricted, working at the depth it accepts, and knowing when the change has happened.

When deep tissue is the right call

It shines for long-standing, localized problems: chronic neck and shoulder tension from desk work, low-back tightness, dense calves and hips from years of training. If your goal is broader — performance, recovery, event prep — sports massage wraps deep tissue techniques into a wider toolkit. And where tissue responds better to decompression than pressure, I'll often bring in cupping or scraping instead.

What to expect afterward

Some next-day soreness is normal after focused deep work — similar to a good workout. Drink water, keep moving lightly, and expect the treated area to feel noticeably freer within a day or two. New to bodywork? My guide to what massage therapy actually is covers how it works and what the evidence shows.

Sessions are priced by time, not by modality: $120 / 60 min, $180 / 90 min, or $240 / 120 min — travel is free within 15 miles of Reading. See full pricing.

Frequently asked questions

How is deep tissue different from a Swedish massage? +
Swedish massage uses lighter, flowing strokes aimed at overall relaxation. Deep tissue works slower and more specifically on deeper muscle layers and fascia to change chronic tension patterns. Sessions often blend both — lighter work to warm tissue, then deeper work where it's needed.
Will I be sore after a deep tissue massage? +
Mild soreness for a day or so is common and normal, like after exercise. Sharp pain, bruising, or soreness lasting several days means the work was too aggressive — that's not how I practice.
How many sessions until chronic tension improves? +
Most people feel a clear difference after one session, but tension that took years to build usually takes a handful of sessions spaced 1–3 weeks apart to change in a lasting way, especially alongside movement changes.
